Breaks Cost SJS Wrestling Title

Breaks cost Ted Mumby's wrestlers the PCI championships held last weekend in Berkeley. The University of California retained its title with a total of 24 points. Washington State and UCLA were second with 18, and SJS and Oregon State tied for third with 17 points.

First break came when team captain Freddie Albright got a little careless with Cal's Jim Eliot and lost the decision. Albright had defeated Elliot several times this year. The clincher came when Sammy Lawson lost to Stanford's Vern Jones in what Mumby called an obviously bad decision. The points lost in these bouts cost the Spartans the title.

Wrestling was not confined to Berkeley over the weekend. Three Spartans, Karl Jensen, Bill Wardrup, and Ralph Payne, were in San Diego attempting to qualify for the final Olympic trials in the 14th district. Jensen's split decision victory over Allison Hensen of San Diego State in the 191 pound class earned him the right to accompany Freddie Albright and Pat Felice to Ames, Iowa, for the final trials in May.
