| 2-11-47 SJS Faces YMCA Tomorrow Coach Ted Mumby's Spartan varsity wrestling squad will play host to the strong Berkeley YMCA team tomorrow evening at 8:00 in the Men's Gym. The Berkeley boys are led by Bob Canary, who reached the semi-finals in the Northern California Junior Wrestling tourney held in Berkeley recently. The Berkeleyites are also bringing three others who say action in the NCJW tournament. There are Bill Benson (147), Charlie Griffith (162), and Charlie Pabis (167). They wrestled three of our boys in the junior championships. Benson tangle with Sam Lawson, and Griffith mixed it up with Bill Elam, while Pabis was pinned by Pat Felice two weeks ago at Berkeley. Others who are with the Berkeleyites include Hal Maddock (135), Jim Leonard (132), Bordy Hommer (186), and Bill Williams (150). Maddock is in charge of the squad. Coach Mumby isn't sure yet who his wrestlers will be. There are still going through the elimination stage. The Spartans have won four and lost one since the regular season started last month. Their lone loss was at the hands of the powerful California Golden Bears. The Spartans, however, got revenge over the Bears at the recent tourney. Our grapplers have a busy week ahead of them Besides their meeting the Berkeley team, they face the strong Stanford squad at Palo ALto on Friday and the following evening they travel to San Quentin where they meet Warden Clinton Duffy's boys. |
