Season Outlook 1979-80

The 1979-80 SJSU wrestling outlook is bright indeed and possibly is the brightest ever in the 45-year history of the sport at Sparta.

Coach T.J. Kerr is going into the 1979-80 mat season with the hopes of improving on last year's 17-6 dual
meet record and the second place finish at the PCAA championships. It's a tough schedule, but Kerr has some tough returnees and top-notch recruits to carry the load.

Two PCAA champions return, along with the most outstandidng group of recruits in any one year in SJSU wrestling history. Sophmore Eddie Baza returns to defend his PCAA title at 126-pounds, while Dave Brouhard will attempt to regain the 177-pound crown he won in 1977. Dave had to redshirt last season due to an injury. Both of these wrestlers are potential candidates for All-America status this year.

Add to these, a pair of California state champions in David Barnes at 127-pounds and Jerry Morrison at 191-pounds and the propects look brighter for the minute.

The home slate is without question the toughest ever to be faced by a SJSU wrestling team.

An excellent road schedule is also on tap with top-level competition in dual meets as well as the usual major invitationals and championship tourneys.

Coach Kerr feels that to be the best, you have to wrestle the best. And he is always attempting to bring
the toughest opponents to San Jose to meet that end.
