SJSU Wrestling Archives Coach Sam Della Maggiore                           Fortunately, a former heavyweight under Coach Grattan took over in 1940 as the Spartan's head coach. Sam Della Maggiore took off to a great start and produced several outstanding individuals. With the promise of a most outstanding team and a couple of potential "national contenders," tragedy again struck the SJSC program...this time in the form of World War 2. The war took practically all of the Spartan athletes but despite this, SJSC somehow managed to "limp" its program through the war years. Della Maggiore was coach from 1940 through 1943.
