Wrestling coach Gene Grattan is having trouble rounding up a well balanced varsity squad as the first night of
practice revealed at least three outstanding candidates for the 155-pound division, with no candidates at all for
the three other positions.
Team captain Mel Bruno, Davey Hines, and Vic Gorin are the three 155-pounders in the thick of the fight for first
position. Gorin is one of the two returning 1940 Spartan PCI champions, while Bruno is a former NAAU titleholder.
Hines, who first wrestled at San Jose High and was captain of the Spartan frosh last year, is reputed to be one
of the most outstanding prospects ever developed locally. During the past season, he was undefeated in collegiate
competition.
Just who Grattan will use in this position seems problematical, as any one of the three seems capable of defeating
all collegiate competition on the Pacific Coast.
The lightweight, 165-pound, and light-heavyweight classes are the three divisions where absolutely no candidates,
whether experienced or not, are available according to Grattan. Grattan declares that he may be forced to draw
straws before every match and let chance which of the three, Bruno, Gorin, or Hines, shall wrestle in the 155,
165, and 175-pound classes.
A call for freshman and varsity candidates was issued by Grattan, as vacancies exist on both teams. Practice is
held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons at 5:00 in the small gym and no experience is necessary he
said. Instruction in fundamentals will continue all this quarter before the start of the regular season. |
