Varsity, Frosh Mat Practice Opens Tonight

Varsity wrestling practice starts tonight in the small gym with only three of last year's lettermen returning. With five varsity positions open, coach Gene Grattan expects a dog fight between members of last year's undefeated freshman team, and a large group of JC transfers.

Four mainstays of last year's second place PCI championship team have been lost and of the three returning veterans, one is a doubtful starter. Team captain Mel Bruno, Far Western 155-pound champion, may be out of competition for the year duce to his injured elbow.

Sam Della Maggiore (hwt) and Bob Riddle (175) have exhausted their eligibility and will leave a big gap in the heavier ranks. At present two sophomores seem to have the edge for the heavy first team berths. They are Carl Kuhl (hwt) and John Hughes, light heavyweight.

Both former team captain Fortune Masdeo and Bob Norona, regular 128-pounder, have failed to register, leaving gaps in the featherweight and welterweight divisions. For the time being, the 128-pound division seems to be held capably by Freddie Albright, letterman of two years ago, who was out of competition for a year.

The heavy freshman team schedule is being line up for next quarter by Grattan, who announces a combined freshman and varsity workout will be held tonight. No experience is necessary for either freshman or varsity candidates, emphasizes Grattan, as fundamental instructions will continue all this quarter.
