State Wrestlers Enjoy Successful Mat Season

Climaxing their season by winning the Junior Olympic Team championship, the Spartan wrestlers, under the leadership of coach Gene Grattan, enjoyed the most successful era in the history of the sport at San Jose State.

After losing their first two meets, the local grapplers finished the season without another blemish on their record. Grattan took hold of the instructorship a little after the season began and his efforts, molded the potential topnotch men of collegiate championship caliber.

Coach Grattan gained his wrestling experience at the University of Iowa where they regularly turn out excellent mat teams.

The Spartans dropped their first match of the season to the Sunnyvale Airbase squad five matches to one. Earl Glover was the only San Jose man to win his bout. In a return meet, coach Grattan's proteges soundly trounced the Gobs by a 20-10 score. Bill Haeberle, Richard Lucky, Peter Enos, and John DeMello reversed the decisions over their opponents in this meet.

Bill Binkley, Richard Lucy, Peter Enos, Art Philpott, and John DeMello were the winners as the Spartans defeated the University of California freshman squad 26-10. This was the first of the successful programs held jointly with coach DeWitt Portal's boxers.

The next meet of the season was lost to their old jinx team, that of San Mateo Junior College by a 22-7 count. Bill Binkley, Richard Lucky, and Peter Enos again turned in winning matches. Joe Amori, San Mateo coach, refereed the bouts and several of his decisions warranted much protest.

In a return meet with the California Bears, Grattan's men were again successful with Richard Lucky, Earl Glover, Art Philpott, and Joe Maynard coming through with victories.

Traveling to Berkeley for the biggest meet in the history of the San Jose State team, the Northern California Intercollegiate tournament, the Spartans upheld their promise by gaining a second place behind California. Art Philpott was a winner of the 165-pound championship for the only individual title taken by the local men.

Entering only a few men in the Technical High School meet, three local men, John Chernoff, Joe Salameda, and Art Philpott, walked away with championships in their weights.

As an appropriate finish to the ultra successful season, the SJS team completely ran away from the rest of the aspirants for the county team championships, running up 30 points to the nearest competitor's score of 13. John Chernoff, Arne Martinson, Art Philpott, and John DeMello won championship medals while Earl Glover, Numerino Davin, and Joe Maynard were runnerups in their weights. Henry Roumasset won third place in the lightweight class.

Much credit is due coach Gene Grattan, a San Jose attorney who came over here and worked with the team at no remuneration beyond the satisfaction that he gained by piloting the local youths to a successful season.
