Spartan, UCLA Mat Teams Meet Friday |
||
| Two new coaches, with undefeated teams so far this year, will match strategy as the San Jose grapplers tangle with
the strong UCLA team. Coaches Bob Thomas of UCLA and Sam Della Maggiore of San Jose are both in their first year as head man at their respective institutions, and both are out to prove their mettle. Thomas was Pacific Coast intercollegiate champion from UCLA last year and has one of the best grappling records ever achieved at the Bruin institution. He stepped into the spot vacated by Briggs Hunt, who was taken into the army. Thomas will be banking on the services of "Chuck" Smythe in the 175-pound class to again defeat team captain Bob Riddle of the Spartans. In the last two meets Riddle has come through with upset wins to keep the Spartans in the win column, when a loss would have meant the end of the San Jose undefeated record. At the Far Western meet earlier in the year Smythe copped a one-point decision over Riddle, for the latter's only loss of the year, and also beat him in the PCI last season. However, Riddle is showing considerable improvement and may upset the high-flying Bruin. |
