  Spartans Garner Second Place Tie In PCI Meet

 
     
  Annexing three individual titles and two second place medals, coach Eugene Grattan's six-man wrestling team wound up in a tie for second place with UCLA behind the University of California in the PCI tournament at Berkeley Friday night.

California finished with 29 points and the Spartans and the Bruins ended with 27 apiece. USF, Stanford, Nevada, and Cal Aggies brought up the also-rans with one point apiece.

Con Lacy (121) was the first Spartan champion, pinning Bud Rosenberg of UCLA in 1:46. Fortune Masdeo (145) and Vic Gorin (155) also won first places. Masdeo decisioned Latane Sale of California, and Gorin won a decision over Harrison Latta of UCLA.

In the light-heavyweight division, Charlie Smith was pinned by Bill Merritt of California in 6:50. Smith received the second place medal.

In the heavyweight class, Bob Riddle won second place by a default victory over Melvin Thompson of California. Riddle lost to the champion, Endro Smythe of UCLA the previous evening.

In the 128-pound class, Bob Norona captured third place after advancing to the finals undefeated from Thursday night. In the final match, Norona was pinned by Bob Thomas of UCLA in 5:31, and in the consolation round was decisioned by Sagino of California for second place.

The Spartans were handicapped by the loss of three 1939 champions, Jack Fiebig, Mel Bruno, and Sam Della Maggiore. Fiebig has dropped out of school, Della Maggiore was ineligible, and Bruno is out for the rest of the season with a broken arm.
