In their biggest meet in the history of wrestling at San Jose State, the Spartan matmen, coached by Bill Hubbard
and Gene Grattan, will travel to Berkeley for a quadrangular meet Friday night.
Varsity squads from California, Stanford, and the California Aggies will form the opposition for the locals. An
invitation was also extended to the San Francisco Dons, but as yet they have not answered.
This will be the largest type of opposition that the local grapplers have attempted to throw.
The Spartans have twice defeated the California frosh squad this season and it has been reported that the lowly
first year men are capable of giving the powerful varsity quite a tussle for top honors.
San Jose State will probably not be the winner, but it is a boost for the school that the mat squad has attracted
enough attention to warrant an invitation. Although meeting more experienced grapplers in most of the weight divisions,
it is not too much to expect to see the Spartans bring home a couple of titles from the big meet.
The local squad is probably the strongest that has ever represented the school and certainly marks an upward trend
of the sport at SJS. Much credit is due to the two livewire coaches, Bill Hubbard and Gene Grattan. |
