Despite their loss at the hands of the University of California wrestling team, coach Sam Della Maggiore's grapplers
will be rated heavy favorites over the decidedly weak Cal Aggie matmen in their meet at Davis tomorrow.
Strengthened by the return of team captain Dave Hines, who was out with the measles, the Spartans should cop all
the matches of the meet. In a previous engagement with the Davis matmen, the Spartan stalwarts swamped the farmers,
taking all eight matches.
Those who will grapple in the Cal Aggie meet are Dave Hines, Ivan Olsen, Fred Albright, Hans Weidenhoffer, Bill
Fawcett, Leo Raiche, and Ken Bailey. The Spartans lack the services of a 121-pounder and will probably forfeit
one match to the Aggie team.
Olsen and Hines are two of the best wrestlers on the coast as their past records show. The two traveled to Lansing,
Michigan, recently to participate in the National Intercollegiates there. Hines had taken ill before he could compete
and had to drop out of the meet, but Olsen put on a good showing before he was finally eliminated from the matches.
Friday and Saturday the Spartans will enter the PCI tourney at Berkeley. Last year the Spartans won the title with
little opposition but this year they will encounter trouble from California, who took the Far Western tourney and
beat the Spartans the first time in six years. |
