Spartans Nosed Out by Bear Wrestlers 20-14

Taking a not too unexpected loss from California University Friday night in the local gym, the Spartan wrestling team will face the Cal Aggies in a return match in Davis Wednesday.

In a previous meet the Spartans swamped the Davis team, taking all eight matches.

Friday night the Spartans held the Bears on even terms, taking four of the eight matches, but the California wrestlers managed to outpoint the Spartans 20-14 to take the meet.

Without the services of a 121-pounder, the Spartans forfeited the opening match to give the Bears a lead.

However, the Spartans pulled to within one point going into the final match, but Ken Bailey, Spartan heavyweight, found the going tough and was pinned in the initial round by Craig Ortlief to give the invaders the meet.

SJS team captain Dave Hines, although winning by a wide margin on a decision, had trouble with his 165-pound opponent and was unable to work a pin.

Ivan Olsen turned in the best performance of the evening, winning by a fall in the second period over his 145-pound opponent. Olsen pinned his man while on his back in a defensive position.

Fred Albright (135) and Hans Weidenhoffer (175) won their matches by decision, while Bill Fawcett (128) and Leo Raiche (155) lost their matches by falls in the initial period.
