The return to form of Vic Gorin, 1940 PCI champion, has wrestling coach Sam Della Maggiore beaming happily these
days as his grapplers prepare for the Bruin invasion from UCLA Friday night in Spartan Pavilion.
Gorin, who wrestles at 155 pounds, has been out of several early meets but is working out regularly now and flashing
his old style that brought him the PCI title last year. He was out of the Cal Aggie meet last week, but looked
strong against California, scoring a fall against his Bear opponent.
Gorin's return bolsters a weak 165-pound division, as Dave Hines, Far Western kingpin at 155 pounds, can be moved
up to the heavier division. Hines has the best record on the team this year and Della Maggiore counts on him to
take the coast title at either 155 or 165 pounds.
With Gorin and Hines in the lineup, Della Maggiore has three champions to throw against UCLA. Ivan Olsen, the second
of San Jose's two Far Western champions, will be in at 135 pounds. Olsen is also undefeated this year and is a
former all-service national champion.
Two Spartan regulars will be out of the lineup, however, and the Bruins may eke out a team win. Dave Kawamoto is
still missing in the welterweight class and my be out the rest of the year with bruised ribs. Johnny Peebles (135)
will probably fill in for Kawamoto.
The other missing Spartan is Carl Kuhl (hwt) who has dropped out of school and will be sorely missed in the unlimited
division. The veteran Charlie Smith has returned to school after student teaching last quarter, and will be used
in place of Kuhl. Smith wrestled at 175 pounds last year and will be the underdog against the 220-pound Bruin heavyweight. |
