Coach Eugene Grattan's hopes for another PAAU, Northern California and Nevada championship wrestling team, rest
on his freshman squad Friday and Saturday nights at the San Francisco YMCA, as the injury jinx hit the hapless
varsity.
Vic Gorin, newly-crowned 155-pound PCI champion, is the latest casualty out with a wrenched back. Con Lacy, 121-pound
PCI champion, will also pass up the tournament due to an old elbow injury. Of the three coast champions, team captain
Fortune Masdeo will be the only one to compete in the tournament.
The San Jose freshmen are the defending PAAU champions, nosing out the varsity 23-21 in 1938. The tourney was passed
up last year due to the National AAU being held on Treasure Island.
Frosh team captain Davey Hines, undefeated in collegiate competition this year, is expected to lead the Spartan
entries at 155-pounds. Mel Bruno is defending champion, but with Bruno out with a broken arm, Hines is expected
to finish in the money.
George Yoshisato (118), Alvin Duty (123), and Mike Bertolia (145) are expected to be outstanding for the freshmen. |
