The SJSU wrestling team took fifth place at the NCAA Western Conference championship last weekend with 30.25 points.
Four members of the team placed third, but were overlooked when finalists were selected.
Some third place finishers were selected to attend the national championships to be held in Oklahoma this year.
"I don't think we're too popular with some of the other coaches, since we beat them in the PCAA championships
last weekend. I believe the Long Beach and Fullerton coaches got together against us," wrestling coach Terry
Kerr said.
J.D. Hawkins of Fullerton was selected as a third place participant. According to Kerr, the coaches did a lot of
talking to get him voted to go to the nationals.
Hawkins defeated Rudy Guevara at the PCAA championships.
Cal Poly-SLO took first place at the NCAA Western Conference with 114.50 team points, Portland State finished with
51.25, Utah State third with 34.50, and Long Beach fourth with 31.75.
"Cal Poly just ran away with the championships. I believe they will place in the national top 10, they are
a pretty strong team," Kerr said.
118-pound Rusty Lockwood ended up in third place in his weight division after being defeated 15-12 by Fresno's
Carecensiano Romero.
Randy Fleury failed to qualify for the finals when Fresno's Kevin Clark posted a 4-2 overtime win.
"Randy was beating the guy, he should have won. He had defeated Clark twice earlier this year," Kerr
said.
Kevin Hejnal (158) also placed third by losing his last match 9-1 to Utah State's Bob Erickson.
190-pound Duane Harris dropped a semi-final match 11-2 to Chris Anaya of Cal Poly. He placed third by defeating
Jim Dreyer of Utah State 7-2 in the consolation.
Dave Brouhard (177) finished fourth after losing in the consolation bracket to Portland State's Peter Lucas 10-3. |
