 Spartans Favored In Mat Tourney

The SJS wrestling squad is one of three teams expected to battle it out for top honors in the first annual PCAA championships to be hosted at SJS today in Spartan Gym.

Preliminary matches will begin at 1 pm and continue throughout the afternoon with finals starting at 7:30.

Six members of the PCAA will be represented in the tournament with SJS, Fresno State, and Cal State Long Beach favored as contenders for the team title.

San Diego State, Cal State Los Angeles, and UC Santa Barbara are the other schools entered in the championship meet.

The Spartans may have a slight advantage in the tournament with competition being in 11 weight divisions rather than the usual nine.

Hugh Mumby, SJS coach and meet director, said the Spartans should pick up strength in the two added divisions.

Winners in the individual matches of the tournament will go on to wrestle national competition in the NCAA championships at Brigham Young.

Earlier dual meet competition saw Fresno State decision both SJS and Long Beach by one point, while the Spartans and Long Beach held each other to a tie.

The overall record for the SJS team this year is 11-5-1.

Top entries for SJS are Gary Ramstetter (160) who has a 13-3 record this year, and Paul Hatling (177) who is 11-4 for the season.

Spartan wrestler Terry Kerr, who has compiled a 9-6-1 mark this season in the 130-pound division, will be moved to 123 for the tournament and Paul Cunningham, who has an 8-2 record, will move up from 130 to 137.

Art Stone (115), who has a 9-4 record, and Walt Thatcher (167) with 10-7, are also expected to do well for the Spartans.
