West Coast amateur wrestling interest will be focused one San Jose State tomorrow As the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
Wrestling Tournament opens a two-day stay at Spartan Gym.
Defending champion Oregon State heads the list of 16 participating schools, host SJS among them.
Coach Hugh Mumby's locals will enter the meet boasting a season record of 11 victories and 2 losses. Most recent
affirmative for San Jose was by a 26-4 count over visiting UCLA, Feb. 27. The Spartans have captured their last
five dual matches in a row.
Mumby will field his usual grappling lineup composed of Marvin Rodrigues (123), Don Perata (130), George Uchida
(137), Ken Spagnola (167), Russ Camilleri (177), and Nick Sanger (hwt).
Undefeated Russ Camilleri will lead San Jose into action. Camilleri was runnerup in the 191-pound class at last
year's meet.
Sanger placed third in the heavyweight division in the 1957 meet, and Rodrigues captured a fourth place spot. Spagnola
grabbed third place in the meet two years ago.
Although San Jose lays claim to no defending PCI champs, Spagnola is one lad who would like to lay hands on a first
place trophy and could well turn the trick. Against UCLA, Spagnola battled defending 167-pound titlist Barry Billington
to a 1-1 draw.
Tournament activities will be divided into after and evening sessions, scheduled at 1:00 and 7:30 pm. Preliminary
matches will be held tomorrow afternoon, with quarter-finals the order of business at the evening convention.
Semi-finals and preliminary consolation action is set for Saturday afternoon. Finals consolations and championship
matches will be held Saturday night.
Student tickets allowing, admission to all four sessions are priced at $1. Friday's bouts may be viewed for fifty
cents, while seats to each Saturday session will be sold for the same price. |
