San Jose State garnered three third places, a fourth and a sixth in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate wrestling
finals held over the weekend at Southern Oregon College.
Hugh Mumby's Spartans finished in a seventh place tie with the University of Washington at 29 points. Oregon State
was the team winner with 83 points, to top a dominant northern school delegation that walked off with the four
places.
Warren King, Paul Hodgins, and Don Anderson were consolation victors (third place) in the two-day double-elimination
tourney which opened Friday.
Anderson was beaten by one point for the second time this season by Oregon State's Mason Fries, the eventual champion.
Fries posted a 3-2 decision over Anderson in the quarter-final action of the heavyweight division.
Anderson roared back with 3-0 and 4-0 wins for third place. The SJS strong man has a 8-2-2 record.
King, according to Mumby, faced one of several weight-choppings with which northern teams used to stack up in point
totals. Doug Muck, another Oregon State toughie, dropped in weight from 157 to 147 pounds and decisioned King 9-3
in the semi-finals.
This was King's first loss of the year, as the durable Spartan fashioned a sterling 16-1-1 mark.
Hodgins lost to champion Len Kauffman of Oregon State 10-4 in the 191-pound quarter finals.
John Lim earned a fourth place in the 123-pound class and Dave Armstrong was sixth in the 130s.
Portland State was a distant second behind the champion Beavers with 59 points. Other strong point showings were
by Central Washington 36, University of Oregon 34, Long Beach State 33, Cal Poly 30, and University of Washington,
which tied with San Jose for seventh. |
