On the strength of first place wins by Dave Hines and Ivan Olsen, scrappy San Jose wrestlers, coach Sam Della Maggiore's
wrestling team finished in third place in the 12th annual Far Western matches held at the Oakland YMCA last Friday
and Saturday nights.
Inglewood YMCA won the team championship with 36 points, thus dethroning the former champs, the San Francisco Olympic
Club which finished second with 29 points. San Jose was an easy third with 23, followed by San Francisco YMCA with
13. California finished fifth with 11, followed by UCLA and Berkeley YMCA with 4 and 3 respectively.
The tournament this year was dedicated to the late Eugene Grattan, former beloved wrestling coach of San Jose,
whose memory was honored on both nights.
Hines scored the most decisive victory of the meet when he tossed Northrup of the Olympic Club for the 155-pound
title. In the semi-finals he easily disposed of Antifae of the Olympics.
Olsen won his way to the semi-finals by dropping Marinoni of the Berkeley YMCA. In the finals he defeated Allison
of California in a hard fought duel. Freddie Albright, former San Jose wrestler who dropped out of school last
quarter, competed unattached and won the 128-pound title. Albright defeated Salvador of the San Francisco YMCA.
Ed Soulds (160) and Karl Kuhl (hwt) turned in good performances for the Spartans but were eliminated by Kordash
and La Rocca of the Olympic Club in their semi-final matches. |
