"Strange as it may seem," related star Spartan wrestler Loren Miller, "i started wrestling by using
it as a means of conditioning myself for football. But i found wrestling so much to my liking that i decided to
stick with it. I find wrestling thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing. In fact, when i want to do some relaxing, i
wrestle. It's an outlet."
"In addition, wrestling is the best all around physical and mental conditioner in existence. It develops the
body, sharpens reflexes, and keeps the mind alert. I love to wrestle in matches, win, lose, or draw. Whether against
an equal or against the best, i still want to compete," he added.
Miller has boxed and has participated in little league and pony baseball.
In high school he was president of his senior class, vice president of his junior class, named outstanding member
of his school chapter of the Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club, named outstanding business student in his senior year,
was vice president of the Hi-Y Club, a district high school club in his junior year, and president in his senior
year. He also held numerous other high school club and organization offices at this time, and received many honors.
Since no Pacific Coast Invitational tournament will be held this year. Miller was prompted to say, "It's a
shame that SJS isn't in a league. We have no climax to our wrestling season."
Another reason Miller likes wrestling so much is, "through competition and association, one meets a top quality
of men. They are the type of people comprising top wrestling groups. Every person i have met associated with wrestling
has been the type of person i would choose, if i could, for my friend." Head Spartan wrestling coach Hugh
Mumby will take Miller to the NCAA championships at the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyoming, this year.
"Coach Mumby is the best coach i've ever studied under," Miller said. "He's done everything for
me."
Although his wrestling records belie it, Miller wrestles under a physical handicap. He lost his left knee cap a
few years ago in an auto accident in which the grappler nearly lost his life. Miller said he "can never maintain
as much strength in my bad knee as i can my other. It bothers me, sure, but in the thrill of competition, one forgets
about little things like that."
When Miller isn't grappling for relaxation, or studying the art of conserving fish and game in order that they
may be caught or hunted later, he works as a hasher, grappling with pots, pans, and dishwater for the ladies of
Alpha Chi Omega sorority. |
