Spartans Capture 3rd In Tourney

San Jose State's wrestling team took third place in the Far Western Championships at Oakland over the weekend, garnering 23 points. The Spartans followed California and the Olympic Club in that order.

Despite the fact that the Spartans were unable to get into the winning column, they amassed their points in the finals and semi-finals matches. Team co-captain Ray Miser lost a close decision to Kittridge of San Diego State in the final 155 pound match and Pat Felice lost to Doc Northrup of the Olympic Club in the 165 pound final.

Fred Albright, wrestling unattached, lost to Ted Stanford of California in the 136 pound final.

Bill Rodman and Bill Payne both lost out in the semi-final matches at 145 pounds. Keith Sahof (115) and Val Marchi (hwt) also were defeated in the semi-finals.

Paul Borg, Bob Johnson, and Carl Holmberg, Spartan 128 pounders, and Hank Rosendin, 155 pounder, lost their quarter-final matches.

Bill Rothwell, Jim Shouse, Bill Wardrup, Sam Lawson, Phil Bray, Bob Cooper, and co-captain Hans Weidenhofer lost their opening matches.
