NCAA Loss Ends Season For Starling
|
| |
| L.Q. Starling ended the Spartan wrestling season in so-so fashion with a first-round defeat in the NCAA championships
over the weekend at University Park, Pennsylvania. |
| |
| Starling was defeated 7-0 by Dave Unik (115) of Ohio University, although Spartan coach Hugh Mumby indicated that
Starling gave a better showing for himself than the score showed. |
| |
| "I feel that Starling was very representative," said Mumby. "The score really was not indicative
of how he did. He certainly deserved to go to the meet, and i am sure he will learn from the experience." |
| |
| Unik eventually came in sixth, losing in the semi-finals, just missing giving Starling another match with the Ohio
University grappler. |
| |
| In winding up their season, the Spartans finished with their first non-winning season in several years at 4-10. |
| |
| Despite the record, however, Mumby is still looking forward to next season for two reasons. First, Starling will
be returning along with sophomores Terry Kerr and Paul Cunningham, both of whom impressed Mumby at times this year. |
| |
| Mumby also has Phil Chan, Gary Ramstetter, Paul Hatling, Arno Dominguez, and John Shufford coming back. |
| |
| And two, it looks like as if there are finally positive indications of a complete WCAC for wrestling. Mumby also
has hopes for a conference invitational to be hosted by SJS March 1 next spring. |
| |
| Although not a sanctioned tournament as yet, Mumby hopes that it will create some new interest in WCAC wrestling. |
