San Jose State's two-man delegation to the NCAA wrestling championships, the big-time show for the nation's collegiate
grapplers, enplaned for Laramie, Wyo. last night.
Russ Camilleri and Ken Spagnola, outstanding members of coach Hugh Mumby's mat team, started a six-day jaunt to
the tournament which will be conducted at the University of Wyoming.
The pair comprise SJS' first NCAA representation since Dick Francis participated in the 1955 carnival.
Mumby sent his proteges tourney-bound on an optimistic note regarding their chances of picking up a few laurels
at Laramie.
"I think that they have as good a chance as anyone from the Pacific Coast," stated Mumby. "I feel
they have a definite chance to place among the top four in their respective events."
Camilleri, 177-pound PCI champion, will compete in his accustomed weight division. Spagnola will see action in
the 167-pound classification.
Camilleri boasts a glittering mat record at Sparta. During the past two years, the senior from Campbell has fought
his way undefeated through 25 consecutive dual meets. As a sophomore in 1956, he dropped only two bouts in 14 tries.
He finished as PCI runnerup at 191 pounds in 1956-57.
Spagnola, a senior from Los Gatos, was 167-pound bridesmaid in this year's PCI get-together. His slate over the
past three years lists only one setback in 39 dual meets. In tournament competition this year he turned back two
NAAU champions, Jay Holt and M.A. Northrup.
Finances for the trip were donated by Andy Oddstad of Oddstad Homes in Redwood City, Emerson Arends of Campbell
Lumber Company, and Archie Ledman, owner of Archie's Steak House in San Jose. |
