 Miller, Lucas Back To Iowa

A grappler who wrestles for "relaxation" and another matman who just joined the SJS squad after semester break are in Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Championships.

Loren Miller and Cy Lucas are Spartan entries in the 145 and 160 pound weight divisions, respectively.

Competition will come from the nation's top collegiate wrestlers. Action started today when the pair tackled opponents determined by a draw.

Both grapplers finished the season in undefeated style.

Miller fought at 160 most of the season and was unbeaten in dual matches. Lucas filled in at the 167 spot after joining the Spartans. Both moved down to lighter divisions for the championships.

"I actually find wrestling relaxing. To me, it's quite enjoyable," reports Miller.

The junior took seventh in last year's championships in the 147 class.

He expects the experience will prove valuable this year. "Eastern wrestlers grapple for decision wins, whereas we (Western entries) wrestle for falls."

"His attitude is wonderful," noted coach Hugh Mumby. Presently back in Iowa with his matmen, Mumby added, "Miller is very coachable. I expect he's one of the best men we've ever had here."

Lucas moved right into the starting lineup after arriving form Foothill. Filling in for the injured Mike Herschfelt, he failed to fall to any opponents.

Among his notable victories was a win over defending AAWU 157 pound champ Bob Mitchell.
