SJSU's PCAA wrestling champions went to the NCAA Western Regionals over the weekend and came away with some valuable experience and a determination to return a better showing next year.

Experience showed as the Spartans were only able to place two wrestlers form a predominately freshman and sophomore squad. Senior Greg Hill took a third in the 134 pound class and junior Peter Araujo placed fourth in the 142 pound weight division.

To participate in the NCAA Division I championships, a wrestler must finish first or second in his weight class.

In addition, there were seven wildcard selections voted on by the coaches of the 12 teams which participated in the Regionals at Northern Colorado University.

According to coach T.J. Kerr, Hill missed going as a wildcard selection by one vote.

Kerr elaborated "When it comes down to the voting, a lot of it is political. We aren't going to get any help from the California schools because of our position (PCAA champions)."

Kerr said that not one California school voted for Hill, who was PCAA champion at 134 pounds in 1975.

Commenting on the Regionals, Kerr said, "It was pretty damn tough. We didn't really expect to do that well because we are such a young team. Our freshmen gain valuable experience and have three more years to improve in the Regionals."

SJSU will have three returning PCAA champions next year. Returning as sophomores will be Mike Applegate (126), Randy Fleury (150), and Jim Rey (167).
