"I just enjoy wrestling so much, i wrestle for relaxation."
The above are the thoughts of 19-year-old Spartan wrestling star, Loren Miller.
Miller, a sophomore physical education major who is minoring in biological conversation, began a spectacular career
in amateur wrestling while attending Upland High School, Upland, California. Miller wrestled junior varsity in
his sophomore year. In his junior and senior years, he wrestled varsity in the 148-pounds division.
While in his junior and senior years at Upland High, Miller won every tournament in which he was entered. In addition,
in his senior year he won the Southern California State high school tournament championship.
Miller was also named outstanding wrestler in the San Bernardino Valley College sponsored high school tournament.
Miller was graduated form Upland High School in 1963, and came to SJS. His Spartan wrestling weight class is the
147-pound division.
Miller was undefeated in his freshman year wrestling. After completing his freshman mat season, Miller moved up
to the ranks of the varsity wrestling team.
He has since lost only one match, by a close score of 2-0 to Cal Poly grappler Jim Teem, with only ten seconds
to go in the match. Teem placed fourth in the NCAA college division competition, and was last year's Pacific Coast
champion. Last December, the Spartan mat star won the San Jose Invitational wrestling tournament for Northern California
colleges held at SJS, at which the Spartans were the winning team.
"Loren is one of the best wrestlers ever to attend SJS," said head Spartan wrestling coach Hugh Mumby.
"His attitude is wonderful. He is very coachable."
This past summer, in the off-season, Miller wrestled for the Olympic Club, the top club in the United States Amateur
Athletic Union.
Miller placed second in the Pacific Coast senior at AAU at Los Angeles, losing first place to 1964 Tokyo Olympics
wrestler Jim Burke.
The SJS matman hopes to make the 1968 US Olympic team.
"If not in '68, then in '72. If not in 1972, then in 1976," said Miller. "I'm only 19. One does
not reach one's prime until around 26. Last years US Olympic team was a young Olympic team."
The sophomore biological conservation major lists waterskiing, hunting, and fishing among his primary outside interests.
"It sounds ironic, i know," he said, "for one who is interested in hunting and fishing, pursuits
which destroy biological creatures, to be majoring in biological conservation. But you have to preserve them before
your are able to shoot them."
In addition to his high school wrestling record, Miller lettered three years in varsity football. In his junior
and senior years, he was captain of his team and made all-league on both offense and defense. He was also voted
"most inspirational player" and "smallest man on the team." |
