Coach Hugh Mumby's grapplers continue workouts today in preparation for this weekend's PCI tournament at San Luis
Obispo, after winding up a successful dual meet season with a 19-11 triumph over Cal Friday.
The Spartans' 8-4 record for a .667 percentage was the best slate posted by any California college.
Against the strong Bears, San Jose heavyweight George Hewitt and Jerry Nelson (147) both scored pin wins, Nelson's
coming in the rapid time of 2:20.
Dave Nevis, Bob Lopez, and Bernie Slate sparked the matmen with decisions over Bear wrestlers, as once again the
Spartans were forced to forfeit the 123-pound wight class for lack of a competitor. This has been a costly factor
throughout the season.
Mumby will probably send a similar lineup into the annual PCI meet, but indicated that L.D. Bennett, recovering
from and infected arm, will get the call at 147. Jerry Quinlan will be in the 191 class.
In last year's tourney the SJS matmen finished fifth to Oregon State who again boasts a strong squad, which is
favored to sweep the team title. |
