Five of the Spartans' most capable wrestlers will represent San Jose State College in the annual PCI tournament
March 9 and 10 at Washington State College, Pullman.
Only three places were determined at press time. Co-captains Frank Waxham (157) ace, Lee Jordan (167) star, plus
Al Cadena (191) matman, have been selected thus far.
Coach Ted Mumby called a dinner meeting last night to choose the two remaining positions. But the session ended
with nothing definitely set. Further action today will decide the issue.
Judging from past performances and their meet with the Japanese All-Stars Wednesday evening, the local contingent
stands an excellent chance of copping the northern affair.
At this writing, the University of California looms as the logical favorite. The Bears boast five matmen who stand
out in collegiate circles.
Other schools entered are Washington State College, University of Washington, Oregon State College, University
of Oregon, Cal Poly, San Francisco State, and several smaller northern colleges that play "sleeper" each
year.
Mumby said yesterday that he and his charges will leave by plane Wednesday afternoon with the first-day matches
set for Friday.
The Spartans may send a team to the Far Western tourney held in Oakland over the weekend, depending upon today's
conference, Waxham is the only wrestler definitely entered. He is the top 156-lb grappler on the Pacific Coast,
being defending champ. |
