| After a long season of training and dieting, the nation's top wrestlers travel to Corvallis, Oregon, for the three-day
NCAA championships beginning today. |
| |
| Both the national All-America team and the final team rankings are determined by individual and team placings. |
| |
| Four SJSU wrestlers in the NCAAs have the pressure upon them, not only for themselves, but for the team and for
the conference. |
| |
| Eddie Baza, at 126 pounds, 167-pound Dave Brouhard, 190-pound Jerry Morrison and heavyweight Casey Gulliford will
represent SJSU in the tournament by virtue of winning the PCAA titles in their divisions. |
| |
| The number of wrestlers each league is allowed to send to the NCAAs is re-evaluated each year. The PCAA was only
allowed to send the league champion this year in each weight class. |
| |
| PCAA coaches are hopeful that the individual league champs can fare well in NCAA tournament competition, so next
year at least five second-place finishers in the league will be able to continue to the NCAAs. |
| |
| All four have set their sights on All-America honors. The top eight finishers in each division make up the All-America
team. If all four are successful, the Spartans should finish among the top 15 teams in the nation. |
| |
| SJSU coach T.J. Kerr has said finishing in the top 20 is his goal. It would be the first time in Spartan history
that a wrestling team would have finished this high. |
| |
| Although Brouhard will be the only Spartan seeded in the tournament, he warns against discounting anybody. |
| |
| "Every year, one or two unseeded guys win the championship," Brouhard noted. |
