Francis Leads Title Hopes For Matmen

Defending Pacific Coast Intercollegiate 177-pound champion, Dick Francis, leads the Spartans tonight and tomorrow
in the fifth annual PCI wrestling tournament at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
The Washington State Cougars, defending title holders who have three champs returning, are the outstanding favorites
to take the crown again. Oregon State, which has three returning PCI champs, is considered to have a strong chance
of coming out on top.
Besides the trio of kings, the Cougars of coach Bill Romeras are sending three second-place men and two third-place
wrestlers of last year's tourney. WSC was undefeated in dual meet competition this season with eight victories,
including a convincing 27-6 win over the OSC Beavers. Washington State champs are Richard Gibson (123), Byron Nelson
(147), and Dan McGhee (167).
The Beavers' returning title holders are sensational Gary McLain (115), Bill Geister (167), and Lew Williams (191).
Geister took the crown in the 157-pound class last year, but he is wrestling in the higher division this year.
McLain was named the outstanding grappler in last season's tourney.
The UCLA squad of coach Briggs Hunt will be led by big Jack Ellens, defending PCI heavyweight titlist. |
