Fresno State scored four firsts in capturing the PCAA wrestling championships Saturday at SJS.
Spartan grapplers picked up two individual championships, two second place finishes, and five thirds to finish
in third place overall. Fresno tallied 78 team points to win the title, followed by UCSB with 64, SJS 57, Long
Beach State 42, San Diego State 25, and Los Angeles State 10.
Paul Hatling and Walt Thatcher, who switched weight classes for the championships, scored firsts for SJS. Thatcher,
who had a 7-3 dual meet record as a 167 pounder and was defending PCAA champ, jumped up to the 177-pound class
and scored a 5-3 decision over Fresno's Doug Waller to win the title.
Hatling, who had an 11-1 season mark in the 177-pound division, scored his victory in the 167-pound class. Hatling,
second in the league finals last year, won the championship on a 9-3 decision over San Diego's Gary Graham after
scoring a pin in the opening minutes of the match.
Overjoyed by his victory, senior Hatling explained, "This is my first championship in high school or college
competition." Both Hatling and Thatcher qualify for the NCAA championships in Minnesota, March 26-28.
Although SJS scored in nine of the ten weight divisions, coach Bill Smith wasn't completely satisfied with the
final results. "If a couple of boys in the lower classes had reached the finals, i feel we might have had
a real shot a Fresno," Smith commented.
As expected, Fresno dominated the lower classes, winning the 118, 126, and 134 pound titles. This, combined with
a win for defending heavyweight champ Ken Oyer, cinched the team title for the Fresno Bulldogs.
Fresno's Dean Hansen took the 190 title by decisioning Spartan Cleve Holt. This marked the second straight year
Holt has finished second.
Brothers Terry and Tim Kerr also scored well for the Spartans. Terry pinned Long Beach's George Morrison to take
third in the 134 class, won by Fresno's Ray Contrariz. Freshman Tim Kerr reached the finals of the 158 division
before losing a heartbreaking 7-6 decision to Gordon George of Santa Barbara.
George built up a 7-0 lead before Tim stormed back in the final round to within one point, but ran out of time
before he could catch the tired Gaucho.
In the 150 class, SJS' Arno Domingues, who finished second last year, scored a third by decisioning San Diego's
Steve Jackson in the consolation finals. Santa Barbara won this division, as well as the 142 title, the only weight
that SJS failed to score in.
Also picking up thirds for SJS were Tim Owens (118), Dave Smith (126), and Ray Mendiola (hwt). |
