 SJS Third In PCI Tourney

 
     
  San Jose State, scoring 45 points, finished third behind title winner Cal Poly and runnerup University of Oregon in the 9th annual PCI wrestling tournament concluded in Spartan Gym Saturday night.

Spartan grapplers Russ Camilleri wrestled the 177-pound Tom Findlay of Southern Oregon College by virtue of a staggering 14-2 point margin to please the partisan crowd of more than 500 person.

Cal Poly's victory climaxed a three-year domination of the PCI team title by Oregon State College. The Beavers, who retained two individual crowns and lost one, grabbed fourth place with 43 points.

Team points total: Cal Poly 59, University of Oregon 56, San Jose State 45, Oregon State 43, Portland State 40, Washington State 24, UCLA 20, Lewis and Clark 13, San Diego State 13, UC Davis 5, Santa Clara 5, Oregon College 1.

Camilleri, undefeated during the regular season, was the lone student of coach Mumby to cart away a first place medal for San Jose. Camilleri humbled Findlay by posting point totals of 5, 7, and 2 during each of the three rounds.

Stocky Ken Spagnola dropped and exciting overtime judges' decision to UCLA's Barry Billington in the 167-pound championship bout. Spagnola and the defending PCI champ fought to a 1-1 deadlock, repeating the score of their regular season engagement.

Heavyweight Nick Sanger and 157-pound Donn Mall carried San Jose's colors as far as the championship finals before being tripped. Sanger was outpointed 3-2 by Cal Poly's Pat Lovell, while Mall dropped a 6-0 verdict to George Krupica of Oregon University.

San Jose's Marvin Rodrigues captured fourth place in the 123-pound division after losing a consolation finals match to Harold Siminck of Cal Poly.

Named the tournament's outstanding wrestlers were Tom Hall of Cal Poly, 137-pound winner, and Billington.
