Do athletes participate for glory, money, or love of sport? As far as wrestling goes, there is not a man on the Spartan team who is not out in the apparatus room daily working for the love of their competitive sport.

Just take a stroll out to the gym any afternoon after five to take a look at these grapplers and their non-professional coach. Out of a team of twenty there is only room for eight to wrestle in any meet, but those not so fortunate are grappling as much as the champions.

Coach Gene Grattan, from nine every morning to about 4:30 is a professional man in downtown San Jose practicing law, but then he sheds the forensic robes for wrestling trunks and the title of San Jose State wrestling mentor.

Under Gene Grattan, the team has suffered setbacks, but these are so far in the minority compared to the champions he has produced and the championships his teams have won. For this service he receives no compensation, in fact, there have been times that he has had to dig into his own packets to pay for entrance fees or to feed one of his athletes on the road. The coaching barrister seems to have instilled this spirit into the souls of his pupils as he already has two of his proteges following in his footsteps.
