Coach Ted Mumby's sensational SJS Spartan wrestling squad continued its winning ways as the Spartans edged the
San Francisco Central YMCA 20-8 last night in the Men's Gym.
Revenge ws sweet for Billy Rodman and team captain Ray Miser as they both defeated their opponents who previously
bested them.
There were a total of nine matches. Two were exhibitions with Mel Bruno, former Spartan great featured in a match
with Ralph Payne.
The Spartans led from the first match as Billy Rodman won by default from Walt Schafer who was injured after a
close and hard fought battle. Our boys increased their lead to ten points in the second match when captain Ray
Miser pinned Don Scrimger of SF after two minutes and 35 seconds.
In one of the better matches of the evening, Pat Felice decisioned George Ehling in a close 165 pound match. This
match was really close and was undecided until the final minutes of the bout.
In the second exhibition match of the evening, Dan Osteen of SJS pinned Joe Clay of San Francisco in 46 seconds
in the fastest match of the meet.
San Francisco won the final two bouts which were thrilling all the way. Oscar Brunetti pinned Bob Cooper near the
end of their match after Cooper had put up a terrific defensive battle. In the close heavyweight match, Ed Epting
San Francisco edged Keith Wilson in another great defensive struggle.
The Spartans meet the strong Berkeley YMCA here either next Monday or Wednesday evening. The Spartans have now
won 3 dual meet and one tourney.
