With the very satisfactory results of the two recent matches with the strong Oakland and San Francisco YMCA teams
in mind, coach Eugene B. Grattan has recently felt moved to exhibit a little optimism in regard to the future of
his Spartan grapplers in the field of amateur sports.
"Handicapped severely in both meets by injuries, the boys came through in a manner surprising even to me,"
declares coach Grattan.
"Everyone of these boys presents strong potentialities. I am especially satisfied with the ability of exhibited
by our heavyweight, Glenn DuBose, in these recent matches. Outweighed and inexperienced, he has come through both
times to pin his opponents in quick order. Arthur Hansen and Jess Wilson also are candidates for the heavy berth
and we are strong in this division, even allowing for the unfortunate loss of Johnny DeMello, who will be unable
to appear during the rest of the season."
"Peter Enos, at 175 pounds, will be back with us in about a week, although in the meantime Bruce Allen is
showing up very well at this position."
"Numerino Davin and team captain Arthur Philpott, both at present on the crippled list, will soon be with
us again to take care of the 118 and 165 pound divisions."
"Melvin Rush, Martin Olavarri, Robert Roumasset, George Wenglein, Eugene Lear, and Dwight Hubbard are slated
to take care of the middleweights. Again, the only thing lacking in some of these cases is experience."
Nearly every candidate is either a freshman or a sophomore, which gives them unlimited opportunity to develop.
The next meet, still tentative, will be an exhibition match held in conjunction with the boxing meet with Santa
Clara University Saturday at a college smoker to be held at Santa Clara. |
