Coach Gene Grattan's varsity wrestling squad, supposed to have met the San Francisco YMCA team Friday night, ran
into unexpected opposition in the big city, barely nosing out a combined all-star squad of Olympic Club and Y-men
16-12.
The Spartans ran into trouble from the opening match with Con Lacy losing a decision to Alexander Riley, former
national champion from New York Athletic Club, now competing for the Olympic Club in the 121-pound class. The Spartans
went into the lead in the next two matches, with Bob Norona pinning Jack Grubert, and Gail Stewart decisioned Bob
Nerell of the Olympic Club in the 128 and 135-pound classes respectively.
In the 145-pound class, Jack Fiebig and Doyle Jensen (Olympic Club former junior national champion), renewed their
perennial rivalry, with Jensen copping a close decision.
Mel Bruno decisioned Basil Konde of the Olympic Club in the 155 division, while Johnson of the F.Y. defeated Vic
Gorin in the 165-pound class.
The light-heavyweight match was son by Angelo of the YMCA over Bob Riddle, and with San Jose trailing 12-11, Sam
Della Maggiore came through with a fall over Jackson of the YMCA in the heavyweight class.
The freshmen walloped the San Francisco State College varsity 35-3 in a preliminary meet, losing only one match.
Dave Hines, Karl Kuhl, George Yoshisato, and Alvin Duty were outstanding for the frosh. |
