| The SJSU wrestling team came up with a surprisingly one-sided 34-12 victory over what had been billed as a "powerhouse"
UCLA Bruins squad Friday night at Spartan Gym. |
| |
| The Spartans increased their dual meet record to 16-3 and solidified their position in the nation's top 20. |
| |
| One of the most outstanding performances for SJSU was in a losing effort by heavyweight Casey Gulliford. Gulliford
was matched against the nation's number three heavyweight, Mike Haschak. |
| |
| Gulliford wrestled very aggressively the first two rounds, yet still found himself behind 15-7. |
| |
| In the final round Gulliford totally dominated Haschak, who was continually penalized for stalling. When the buzzer
sounded to end the match, Haschak was lying on the mat motionless. But he held on for a 15-13 victory. Gulliford
seemed to have made what would have been the tying takedown just as the time expired. |
| |
| Most of the exciting moments in the meet were in SJSU victories, however. |
| |
| Dave Brouhard, 167 pounds and ranked 7th in the nation, returned to action after missing two weeks with a shoulder
injury. Brouhard didn't look at all rusty as he totally dominated Jeff Newman 16-6. |
| |
| Eddie Baza gave SJSU the victory in a very tough 126-pound match against highly regarded Bohay. Baza seemed to
get stronger as the match went on. After an even first round, Baza took control late in the second round and finished
with a 12-7 victory. |
| |
| The Spartans' most exciting victory was in the 158-pound class as Adam Elias came from behind to defeat "Irish"
Pat O'Donnell. Elias, behind for most of the match, finally grabbed the lead with a last minute takedown. He held
on for a 9-8 victory. |
| |
| Three pins were registered in the meet. In one of UCLA's few bright moments, 134-pound Harlan Kistler pinned Steve
Lutz with just 18 seconds remaining in the match. |
| |
| The Spartans held a 34-6 lead after Klein's match. UCLA took the last two matches to somewhat tighten things up.
John Henderson took the 190-pound match in a tight 9-7 victory over Jerry Morrison. With Haschak's win over Gulliford,
the Spartan victory margin was cut to "only" 34-12. |
| |
| SJSU returns to the mat wars Friday night against Cal State Bakersfield. The next home meet will be Feb. 12 against
defending PCAA champion Utah State. |
