Coach Ted Mumby's Spartan wrestlers hope to annex their second straight tournament this year, when they participate
in the 18th annual Far Western Championships, which will be held in the Oakland YMCA this weekend.
The Spartans, who have already won the Northern Cal Junior Wrestling tourney at Berkeley a few weeks ago, stand
an excellent chance of winning the championships, as they have four former FWC and four NCJW title holders. The
Spartans won the PCI championships in 1941. In 1942, team co-captain Hans Weidenhofer and Fred Albright won the
175 and 135 pound titles respectively in this tourney.
Their stiffest competition is expected to come the Olympic Club of San Francisco. The Winged O team led by Doc
Northrup, the NAAU title holder, is overflowing with ex-state and national champions. |
