Hugh Mumby's wrestlers ended their dual meet season with emphasis Monday night, thumping visiting Santa Clara 31-5
in the Men's Gym.
The SJS mat monsters lost only once against the Broncos, who gave the Spartans their final competitive workout
prior to Friday's opening of the PCI finals in Ashland, Oregon.
San Jose State finished with a dual record of 5-6, which included three losses where a Spartan pin could have turned
defeat into victory.
But the local matmen had top individual performances and December's Northern California championship trophy to
almost overshadow their sub-.500 season.
Warren King chalked up his 12th victory of the season against the Broncos, as against one draw. King had an 11-1
lead before pinning John Carson in the third period.
Chet Belknap (167) recorded a second period pin over Bronco Pete Parrish. Art Beatty (137) pinned SCU's Angie Intrert
also in the second period.
Cliff Olson decisioned Rick Farsyn 5-1 and Don Anderson and Jim Noon were forfeit victors to account for the other
SJS points.
Anderson was runnerup, behind King, as most successful grappler. The burly heavyweight posted a season mark of
six wins, one loss, and two draws. His only setback came on a close 4-3 decision.
Noon (177) had a 6-1-1 record, while John Lim and Olson each won four times.
The Spartans leave tomorrow for the two-day tourney at Southern Oregon College. Last year, San Jose State placed
third. |
