Matmen Compete In Far Western Tourney Friday

Wrestling coach Sam Della Maggiore will enter at least 14 varsity matmen and eight freshmen in the annual Far Western
tournament at Oakland YMCA Friday and Saturday in an effort to win the first Spartan championship since 1937.
Withdrawal of captain Mel Bruno from the team leaves San Jose without a defending champion for the first time in
recent years. Last year Bruno and captain Fortune Masdeo won individual championships.
The freshmen and varsity men will enter as separate teams, and with the varsity handicapped by injuries, the freshmen
may finish ahead of the regulars in team standings. In the past there has been great rivalry between the squads.
In 1938 the freshmen with one of the strongest squads in history finished ahead of the varsity in the annual PAAU
tournament for the championship of Northern California and Nevada. The frosh had three individual champions and
the regulars two.
Varsity entrants in the tournament will be: Ivan Olsen, John Peebles, Dave Kawamoto, Sam Datri, Val Reese, Dave
Hines, Vic Gorin, Charles Mathison, August Avila, Ed Souls, Bob Riddle, Charlie Smith, John Hughes, and Carl Kuhl.
Frosh entrants are: Don Carmen, Glen Mangus, "Happy" Harata, Otto Kuhl, George Pinard, Bill Hoover, Bill
Johnson, and Sag Saghatelian. |
