If results count for anything at all, it would seem that according to the 40-5 score recorded last night by the
Spartan grapplers against the San Mateo Junior College Bulldogs that our varsity is not necessary.
Elden Fisher, San Jose 135-pounder, started the ball rolling by pinning Arthur Fleet of San Mateo in six minutes.
Harold Wise followed this up by doing Fisher one better by gaining a fall over Marcus Norris in 1:24 in the 139
pound match.
Gene Lear, varsity Spartan welterweight, won over Dick Bennion, San Mateo JC and Olympic Club star in the longest
match of the evening, nine minutes and 47 seconds. Lear came from behind to pin Bennion with a half-nelson.
Both wrestling for the first time this season, Don Hill and Melvin Rush won handily over their respective opponents.
Vaughn Hubbard spotted Jim Yates of San Mateo ten pounds and lost his match in five minutes. Seriously handicapped
by the weight disadvantage, Hubbard was impressive in his work.
The score is not indicative of the ability of the Junior collegians, who showed considerable class under the careful
tutorship of Coach Leo Bassett.
