Grapplers Hunt Victory In Finale
|
| |
| Bill Smith's SJS grapplers hope to finish their dual meet season with a winning record as they tangle with always-tough
UC Berkeley tomorrow at Berkeley, beginning at 7:30 pm. |
| |
| SJS wrestling team fell to Fresno State 32-10 Tuesday night at Fresno, evening the Spartan seasonal record at 5-5-1. |
| |
| Despite the lopsided score, Smith felt that his young squad could have pulled the match out with a few breaks. |
| |
| After falling behind 11-0, SJS came back to within six at 16-10, but had to forfeit the 167-pound match as Walt
Thatcher, 7-2 for the season, was unable to make the trip. Following this, Paul Hatling (177) lost his first match
of the year and Fresno was an easy victor. |
| |
| Brothers Terry (142) and Tim Kerr (158) were the only bright spots for SJS as each scored pins for the only Spartan
points of the evening. |
| |
| It was a different story at Cal State Hayward Friday night as SJS scored a come-from-behind 23-11 win over the
Pioneers. |
| |
| The Spartans trailed 8-3, getting only a decision win from Tom Owens (118) in the initial three matches before
five straight wins cinched the team victory for SJS. |
| |
| Terry and Tim Kerr each scored decision wins over Hayward with Terry winning by a 22-5 match point score. |
| |
| Also victorious for SJS were Arno Dominguez (150), Thatcher (167), and Hatling (177)...all winning by decision. |
| |
| After tomorrow's match, SJS will have one week to prepare for the PCAA tournament, which will be held at SJS, March
7. |
