SJS Matmen Grapple Gator Squad Tonight

The San Francisco State College Gators provide the competition for the San Jose State wrestlers tonight at 7:30 in San Francisco.

Losing only one match, the SJS wrestling squad powered its way to a 27-3 victory over the University of California Bears in Berkeley Thursday night.

Substituting for ailing Dave Armstrong in the 123-pound class, John Lim found highly regarded Toby Burnett a little too much and dropped a decision for SJS's only loss.

But from then on it was all San Jose. Dick Alderson (130) started SJS on the winning road with a decision over Allen Chen. Bob Lopez (137) and Warren king (147) came on to pin their opponents Ricky Sylvester and Dave Packard.

The Spartans then scored three decisions in a row. Cliff Olson (157) beat Ko Abe, Fred Yrueta (167) took Ken Nemzer, and Ron Ruscigno (177) topped Dick Rice.

Heavyweight Paul Hodgins ended it up in grand style, pinning Max Levine.

"It was our best performance of the season," coach Hugh Mumby exclaimed following the match. "The whole team as a unit wrestled real well."
