The Spartan wrestlers are preparing for the PCAA championships in Fresno, Saturday morning.
Senior Terry Kerr will make his third conference finals appearance. As a sophomore, SJS was in the WCAC. There
he placed second at 123 pounds. Last year he took a third in the PCAA at 134.
Saturday, he will grapple at 142. Will he be trying harder because this is his senior year? "You're damned
right!" Kerr exclaimed. As far as the meet goes, he said he had already beaten a tough 142 wrestler in the
conference tournament. However, he is not sure who he will be meeting. Kerr explained why, "schools move guys
up and down for the conference finals."
Tim Kerr, sophomore and Terry's brother, placed highest in the PCAA for SJS last year. He captured a second place
at 158. He has been wrestling at 167 this year but will pare down to 158 pounds for Saturday.
Of the championships he said, "Pressure builds with experience because people expect more of you. I think
competing in the tournament last year will help, though." He said the team has been progressively working
harder for the past three weeks.
Brother Terry said of the championships, "The Biola tournament was tougher because there were bigger guys
but the PCAA is more important."
Coach Hugh Mumby said of the team's chances, "We do not have a full team because we don't have anyone at 177
or 190 who i am willing to put on the mat." He expects Fresno, San Diego, Long Beach, and UC Santa Barbara
to vie for the title.
Individually, the Spartans' chances are rated higher by Mumby. Besides the two Kerrs, he said junior Dan Cabral
at 118 and freshman Don Jackson at 240 head the list. Also wrestling will be Ray Jimenez and Ron Wright. Wright
is nursing some injured ribs. "They hurt but i'm gonna go anyway," he said during warmup before practice
yesterday.
Cabral feels the meet will be just like any other. He got a late start this year and has competed in only three
tournaments before transferring from San Jose City College. He said the competition is tougher because there aren't
many "fish" (poor wrestlers) in the finals.
Jackson has never met any of his upcoming opponents. "I don't worry about who it is or how i get it done.
I just have to get it done," explained the freshman heavyweight. |
