Having defeated the reputedly strongest team in the northern part of the state, the Spartan matmen will Friday
night turn south to defend the old fort against the invasion of UCLA.
Coach Gene Grattan expects to personally scout the first appearance of the UCLA matmen at Berkeley Thursday night
in the civil war of brother ursines, Bruins against the Bears. With this information, the Spartan strategist will
instruct his men as to the vulnerable spots of the Southerners.
Boasting a group of veterans, the Bruins come to this section touted as the strongest squad of Southern California
intercollegiate wrestling history. Coach Grattan is expecting to use his entire squad consisting of freshmen and
varsity matmen and therefore the meet will be an exhibition but wrestled in the inimitable manner that has given
them so far a record marred only by two extra points won by the Olympic Club.
The SJS mentor is depending greatly on two of his varsity veterans, Martin Olavarri and Melvin Rush. Olavarri has
the best record so far in which he has been undefeated and has garnered team points second only to PAA champion
Jack Fiebig. His success so far has been due to his steady type of work in which he uses his leg to such a degree
to completely outfit his opponent. Mel Rush at 165 pounds is consistently in there fighting and will be a tough
man for Hardy of the UCLA squad to defeat or even stay the route with. |
