Ted Mumby, SJS wrestling mentor, released a list yesterday of the five Spartan grapplers who will face a quintet
of Japanese college All-Stars in Spartan Gym Wednesday night, Feb. 28.
The Japanese All-Stars have just started a tour of the United States and Wednesday's meeting against the locals
will be their first action against a collegiate aggregation.
Bennie Ichikawa, varsity 123-pound stalwart, will meet Jiro Boda, Japanese collegiate 120-pound champion, in the
curtain raiser.
Other pairings include Jack Cassedy, Gold and White 130-pound representative, meeting Shobachi Ishi, 125-pound
college champion, and John Jackson, SJS 135-pound performer, locking arms with classy Kyohei Nagasato.
Mumby hasn't decided on his representative in the 147-pound class. Ray Bunnell and Johnny Melendez probably will
meet in an elimination match to determine Sparta's entry against Koji Kanda, Japanese 147-pound ace.
Best match of the evening may be the 160-pound duel pitting Frank Waxham, San Jose's co-captain who is undefeated
in 1951 competition, against Eichi Kazama, highly heralded Japanese grappler.
Ichiro Hata, coach of the Japanese team, has asked Yosh Uchida, Spartan judo coach, for permission to challenge
seven of Uchida's blackbelt judoka in exhibition matches Wednesday night. Uchida reportedly has granted permission. |
