One of the bright lights on the SJS wrestling team this season, as well as for the past three season, is matman co-captain Art Beatty.

Beatty, a personable 5'6" 21 year old senior business major from Los Gatos, has earned one freshman and two varsity letters during the past three seasons and is destine to earn his fourth this year.

Beatty's wrestling career began at Los Gatos High School where the stalwart grappler earned four varsity letters and was co-captain of this 1961 team.

In the 1958 Santa Clara Valley Athletic League high school conference meet, he placed second in the 103-pound class. He took third place in the 112-pound class in the 1959 SCVAL conference.

In 1960 and again in 1961, Beatty placed first in the 127 and 133-pound divisions respectively, thus qualifying for the Northern California Section 1 conference meet both years. He placed third in the NCS 133-pound division in 1961, the year he was co-captain.

Coming to SJS in 1961, Beatty has been "one of the outstanding members of the Spartan team," according to head wrestling coach Hugh Mumby.

This season Beatty has lost only two matches. Both losses were to individuals whom Mumby rated among the best in their division on the west coast.

Beatty place fourth in last year's PCI, wrestling in the 137-pound class, and is currently rated one of the top three wrestlers on the SJS team.

"There will be no PCI this year," said Beatty. "Consequently, our wrestling team has lost an opportunity to meet some of the best wrestlers in the country."

Beatty views the termination of his eligibility in wrestling with mixed emotions. "I'm happy to be relieved of the pressure, but i will miss the thrills of competition," he reflected.

Water skiing, snow skiing, and sailing rate high among the star matman's outside interests. In Los Gatos High School, Beatty was also active in track and "B" football, as he was too light for varsity.

Beatty's light weight has led him to make the following comparison between football and wrestling:

"Unlike football, where weight often plays a deciding role in determining success or failure, wrestling is a sport open to everyone, regardless of weight or size.

"Wrestling can accommodate everyone. Compared to football, there are very few injuries in good wrestling, which differs drastically from the wrestling seen on television. TV wrestling is fake. I would encourage anyone to try out for the wrestling team, even if one does not have any prior experience. Wrestling is a wonderful means of developing strength, coordination, and reflexes."

"Many wrestling aspirants never realize their potential because they have qualms about not making first string. Consequently, man of them never try out for the team. An outstanding coach as Hugh Mumby will bend over backwards to give each man of the team equal and proper attention."

"If a wrestler does not make first string his first season, the practice and experience he gains will still be invaluable. If he has drive and determination to better himself, there is no reason why he can't make first string the following season. Unlike football, in wrestling even the little guy has a chance."
