 Mat Duo Gains Laurels

Robert McDowell and Duane Harris are two of of the premier wrestlers on SJSU's wrestling team.

This past weekend, each picked up a pair of victories, a 27-12 triumph over the University of Washington and a second-place showing in the University of Portland Invitational Meet.

However, McDowell and Harris' most difficult wins occurred in California, and these were much tougher bouts for the grapplers than either found on the mats up north.

Due to a previous commitment, coach T.J. Kerr had to send his second team, rather than his first, to represent SJSU in the San Francisco State University Invitational. His first team was on a trip through Washington and Oregon. This led to some complications for Kerr and his two wrestlers.

"The meet at San Francisco was designated the California College Wrestling Championships and was to be used as the criteria for selecting the representatives for the North-South All-Star Meet this Monday at Cal State Berkeley,' Kerr commented.

The nucleus of the team was on tour. Thus the Spartan grapplers were not fully represented and it was questionable whether any member of the traveling squad should be added to the All-Star squad because they had not qualified at San Francisco.

"It took a lot of work and convincing, but we did manage to get McDowell and Harris onto the North team. There was some question as to whether or not they should have gotten on, but they are two very talented wrestlers," Kerr said.

Last Friday and Saturday, McDowell and Harris displayed the talents their coach was referring to.

McDowell took a victory in the dual meet with the Huskies and came back the following afternoon to wind up in the same position in the Portland Invitational. Harris dittoed his teammate's performance in the 190-pound weight class.

SJSU finished second as a team with 57 points behind tourney winner University of Oregon.

Russ Lockwood turned in impressive outings as he had a win in the 118-pound battle at Washington and a second in the Portland Invitational.

Although he didn't place, freshman John Middlestead (126) of San Jose's Branham High competed well enough at the San Francisco Invitational to gain a spot on the North squad with McDowell and Harris.
