Although the Spartan matmen claimed a 31-10 victory over the Athens Club Saturday night, the truth, when revealed
yesterday, disclosed the fact that what really took place in Oakland was a free-for-all meet with the SJS wrestlers
taking on the cream of several Oakland wrestling organizations.
It seems that when the Spartans arrived in Oakland the Athens Club met them with only four wrestlers. With only
four matches it appeared that the wrestling program was going to be short and sweet.
However, one or two topnotch matmen from the Oakland YMCA appeared on the scene with all good intentions of being
on the sidelines as spectators. Along with them came a pair of the University of California's crack men.
The Athens Club, in an effort to at least please the spectators, arranged for the California and YMCA to appear
on the program. The result was San Jose State College against an all-star team composed of the Athens Club, the
Oakland YMCA, and the University of California.
The final score of this melee found the Spartans on the wrong end of a 20-16 score, but as the Club officially
forfeited the matches in which the Y and UC men had participated, SJS ended on top. |
