Wrestlers Lose To Cal Poly

 by Mike Jones

Last weekend was a very busy one for the SJSU wrestling team.

After losing 34-9 to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo on Thursday night, the Spartans bounced back Friday night to easily defeat Long Beach State 44-5 and Biola 43-4. They capped the weekend Saturday by taking third in the Biola Invitational Tournament.

But even with the two other victories and the high placing in the tournament, the Cal Poly loss was a tough one to lose, mainly because of the great rivalry between the two schools.

Coach T.J. Kerr said his team was "as prepared as it could be," but "Cal Poly was extremely hot."

"All the breaks were going their way," Kerr said. "It was as if we were destined to lose."

This seemed evident with Marvin Jones and Michael Hairston. Jones was wrestling at 177 pounds and Hairston at 158 pounds. According to Kerr, both were doing great, when all of a sudden, both were pinned.

The winners for SJSU against Cal Poly were Wayne Jones at 126 and Ed Baza at 134.

Both Jones and Baza won easy decisions. Jones defeated his opponent 20-7, while Baza won 16-6.

"Baza looked great," Kerr said. "He hasn't had a close match at 134 yet."

Kerr added that Jones wrestled very well, but he banged his elbow while wrestling against Biola and will not wrestle this week. He said there is a lot of fluid and inflammation and it could be infected.

Aside from Jones and Baza, Kerr was also pleased with the performances of freshman Pat Huyck, and juniors Clay Davis and John Middlestead.

"Huyck did good," Kerr said. "He lost 14-12 against the number one seed form Nevada-Las Vegas (in the Biola Invitational)."

Davis, who normally wrestles at 177 pounds, has been wrestling as a heavyweight ever since Casey Gulliford was sidelined with a knee injury.

"Davis didn't do bad for a small heavyweight," Kerr said. "He took fourth in the tournament."

Kerr also mentioned that one of Davis' victories in the tournament was against a wrestler who weighed over 300 pounds.

Middlestead, at 142 pounds, beat an All-American from Cal Poly twice in the tounrament.

Even though they took third in the Biola Invitational, Kerr was pleased because they finished higher than any Pac-10 school.

The Spartans will wind up the regular season Friday night against Fresno State.

Kerr said that he will use the best line-up that he can against Fresno. He mentioned that 190 pound John Torrise has a pinched nerve in his neck, and he and Marvin Jones will switch weights, Jones wrestling at 190 and Torrise at 177.

Freshman Dave Ciprian will wrestle in Wayne Jones' place at 126. Kerr said that Ciprian is a little small, but that he is "a tough kid."

Friday's match will be at Spartan Gym and will start at 7:30 pm.
